Course selection for 21-22 School Year (5th/6th)

Course Selection 21-22

Course selection/electives online form to be completed and submitted for each rising 5-8 AMS student by Mon., April 19:

Fifth Grade:

All fifth grade students are scheduled on a rotating basis into the following Integrated Arts or "specials" classes:

  • Wellness (PE classes meet for two trimesters, health class meets for one trimester)
  • Art
  • Computer Skills
  • Family & Consumer Sciences
  • Innovation & Design

ALL fifth grade students select a music course for the year.

General Music:  General Music classes include music reading skills, a little singing, playing bells and keyboards, ukulele and a little music history.

Chorus*:  AMS has produced some amazing choruses in past years.  This class will include some music reading but mostly it is about singing together.  This class is also great foundation for those interested in music theatre or solo performance.  And...it's fun!

Band*:  This is the class for students who want to learn a concert band instrument.  No prior experience is needed!  We start from the beginning.  Pick an instrument and check the Music area of the AMS website in early September for needed materials and how to rent an instrument.  If you choose this option, you MUST CHOOSE from among the instruments listed in the band information section. For specific information on the band program see the band site:  bit.ly/joinamsband   Also, see the letter from Band Director Kevin Swift on the 5th grade music program here.

*Band and chorus classes require evening performances.

Sixth Grade:

Similar to fifth grade, sixth grade students are scheduled on a rotating basis into the following Integrated Arts or "specials" classes:

  • Wellness (PE classes meet for two trimesters, health class meets for one trimester)
  • Art
  • Computer Skills
  • Family & Consumer Sciences
  • Innovation & Design

Sixth grade students also select a music course (band, chorus, general music) for the year.

World Language classes become a regular part of the curriculum beginning in grade six for most students.  We will schedule an every-other-day language class for your child next year. We are asking students and parents to select either French or Spanish for study over the next three years.  Serious consideration should be given to your selection as the language you choose will be a part of your schedule for grades six, seven and eight.
